Over the last six months, National Bus has worked on a program of allocation of low floor (wheelchair accessible) buses on specific services each weekday. We have focused on our most concentrated routes. The following have now been identified with low floor buses.

  • Routes 250, 251 & 253 via Rathdowne St, Carlton,
  • Route 246 Elsternwick to Clifton Hill and
  • Route 201 City to Doncaster Shoppingtown.

Nominated services operating as low floor accessible bus are now identified with a "W" on our website timetables for these routes and on timetables at bus stops for these routes. The provision of accessible buses will be subject to the operational requirements of National Bus Company. Low floor accessible buses, subject to operational requirements usually operate weekend services.

  • Request a low floor bus be allocated on a specific route/time - these requests can usually be accommodated with at least 24 hours notice.
  • Check that there has been no alteration to the daily (weekday or weekend) allocation of low floor accessible buses

National Bus operates 87 wheelchair accessible buses. All these buses feature special "kneeling suspension" and a ramp to provide easy access for less mobile passengers. The internal design of the buses also makes travelling a lot easier for people in wheelchairs, the elderly and the visually impaired.

Seats that can be used by all passengers fold up against the wall when the space is needed to accommodate a wheelchair. These seats are marked with a sticker in the window above them indicating that the seats must be vacated if required by a less mobile passenger or expectant mother.

There is space in each bus for 2 wheelchairs. These will accommodate most manual and electric wheelchairs with max. length 1250mm, max. width 750mm, max. turning circle 1500mm, and max weight 200kg.

For safety reasons, passengers in wheelchairs are advised to face the front of the bus, bracing your wheelchair against the side and back of the space, applying the brakes and securing the seatbelt of the wheelchair. Wheelchair accessible buses display a blue and white wheelchair sign on the front of the bus, and on the easy access door.

Low access, level floors, wide aisles & large brightly coloured handrails assist those with visual impairments. Guide dogs are welcome on all buses.

The following routes are dedicated mini bus routes and as such, wheelchair accessible buses cannot be operated on these routes:
